VESPERS
Vespers is the name of the service of evening prayer. The word comes from the Greek word “hespera” and the Latin word “vesper” which mean “evening”. The themes of Evening Prayer are light, repentance, a recollection of the gifts God has given throughout the day, meditation on the scriptures, thanksgiving for all that God has accomplished, and intercessory prayer. The heart of Vespers is the dramatic portrayal of the Gospel, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is celebrated every Lord’s day. The service recalls the creation of light when God spoke it into the darkness at creation and once again when he spoke it into the darkness of death and His Son arose. COMPLINE
Compline derives its name from the Latin word “completorium” meaning “completion”. Compline is the last service of prayer in the Divine Office, at the completion of the day’s work as we get ready for night’s rest. In this service we confess the sins we’ve committed during the day and then receive God's pardon in Christ. We also commit our care and keeping during the night to God, who is ever watchful, for He neither slumbers nor sleeps. From the Manual on the Liturgy

MATINS
Matins is derived from the Latin adjective “matutinus” which means “of or belonging to the morning”. Matins is the service of morning prayer. The principal theme of the service is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, shown by the rising sun and the light of a new day. In this service we thank God for the rest we were able to receive and ask that we and our neighbors might receive His many benefits throughout the day as we live in the vocations which He has given us.
